Another Birthday Gone

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

I just celebrated my 26th birthday yesterday in a most unremarkable fashion. Got up early, went to work, brought some carrot cake I made over the weekend for colleagues, got out of work, had dinner at a good Chinese restaurant with some friends, then went home. I had initially intended to go to Sweden after dinner to watch the England-Sweden World Cup match on a big screen in the park, together with some potentially rowdy and drunk Swedes, but chickened out right when I was about to stick my card in the ticket machine. I was still feeling a bit tired from the weekend, having gone out every night from Friday to Sunday, and I had an appointment early this morning at the US embassy for a visa interview. In retrospect though it would have been nice to go to Sweden anyway, especially with that tie-making 2nd goal from Sweden at the 90th minute which must have sent the Swedes in a frenzy. Instead I was home with my laptop, chatting with a few friends and watching the match peripherally, sans the alcohol.

Days prior, as my birthday loomed nearer, I wasn’t feeling particularly excited about celebrating another year, and I thought that the day was probably just going to roll along like all the rest. Yet looking back now, I wish something really special HAD happened, and that my 26th birthday didn’t seem… well… flat.  I don’t even have any pictures to show for it.

I have a party in my apartment to look forward to on Friday. Still need to think of something special to serve apart from chips and peanuts though. It’s a chance for me to make this birthday a bit more memorable. Otherwise there’s my diving lessons on Saturday and Sunday to take my mind off a lukewarm week and shift the focus to what should be an exciting year to come.
